What is LACS?

  • LACS stands for Large Airway Collapse with Symptoms.
  • We use LACS as an umbrella term to describe a collection of conditions that cause floppiness (Malacia) in the large airways – the trachea and bronchi. This causes them to collapse in during breathing and causes symptoms including breathlessness, wheeze and cough. Patients with this condition may initially be diagnosed with asthma, COPD or emphysema as the symptoms are similar.
  • The causes of LACS are numerous and include conditions where the supporting structures of the airway (e.g. cartilage rings) can collapse. One such condition is called relapsing polychondritis.
